Victoria was born here in 1819 and woke here at eighteen to be told she was Queen; the state apartments and her childhood rooms are the visit. The private side is what the Crown audience comes for: Apartment 1A, Princess Margaret's home for forty years and then William and Catherine's, Nottingham Cottage where Harry and Meghan lived, and Apartments 8 and 9, Diana's from 1981 until the night in Paris, after which the golden gates disappeared under a mile of cellophane and flowers. Her statue stands in the Sunken Garden, which is free to see without a ticket.
