Nash designed the arch as the triumphal entrance to the palace forecourt, modelled on Constantine's in Rome, and it was taken down and re-erected here when Blore added the east front that is the palace's face today. The Royal Family and the King's Troop are still the only ones allowed to pass through it, in theory; in practice it stands on a traffic island where Tyburn's gallows once were.
