Lutyens's Portland stone cenotaph of 1920 has no religious symbol and no name, only the dates of the two wars and a stone wreath, and it became the centre of national remembrance because of what happens here on the second Sunday of November: the silence at eleven, the royal wreaths, the march past. Elizabeth II laid a wreath here nearly every year of her reign and her funeral procession passed it; the flags of the Commonwealth fly around it.
