Elizabeth II took the salute at every Trooping of her reign but one, on horseback side-saddle until 1986 and then in a carriage, and Charles rode again in 2023 for the first time in thirty years; the Crown's episode of the 1981 blank shots fired at the Queen is a real event from this parade. The colour is trooped through the ranks on Horse Guards Parade, the Household Division marches back down the Mall, and the family gathers on the palace balcony for the RAF flypast. Stand tickets are balloted in the winter; the Mall and the park are free.
