Henry III began the present church in 1245 in the French Gothic manner, on the site of Edward the Confessor's abbey, and it has crowned every monarch since William I. Behind the high altar is the Confessor's shrine, and around it the tombs of kings; the Lady Chapel Henry VII added has a fan vault that seems to hang rather than rest. Poets' Corner started with Chaucer, who was buried here because he lived nearby.
