The largest brick building in Europe burned coal for London's electricity from 1933 to 1983 and then stood roofless for thirty years before the rebuild that opened it as shops and flats in 2022, with Turbine Hall A's art deco control room and Turbine Hall B's steel kept as the spine of the place; the four chimneys were taken down and rebuilt to the millimetre. The Chimney Lift takes you up the north-west chimney in a glass capsule to a platform 109 metres over the river, standing where the smoke once came out.
