Walking
Ben's family is from this part of London and the walk is about what happened to it. The first half is King's Cross: the railways as the high confidence of the Victorians, and the offices and squares built over the goods yards in our own time, which he treats as the same story told twice - who gains, who is moved, and what happens to the public space in between.
The second half leaves the stations for Clerkenwell, which looks like a quiet neighbourhood of alleys and squares and spent the nineteenth century as a headquarters of riot, radicalism and unorthodox thinking.
