The Metropolitan Railway opened in 1863 and was built by digging a trench along the road and roofing it over, which is why the oldest stretch runs where it does. Baker Street still has the original platforms with their arched recesses, and the walk uses them as the starting point for how the network was built, who fought it, and what it did to the shape of London above ground.
