The building held vats and hops for a brewery in the 1870s, then a film studio, then Covent Garden's banana-ripening depot in the 1920s. The name is Donald Albery's and Margot Fonteyn's, three letters each, from the rehearsal studio he set up here for her.
It became an independent producing house in 1992 under Sam Mendes, and the list after him - Michael Grandage, Josie Rourke, Michael Longhurst, and Tim Sheader since 2024 - is most of a generation of British directors. 251 seats and twenty standing, which is why the work here travels to the West End and Broadway rather than the other way about.
