Ernest Schaufelberg built it in 1924, six years before he did the Adelphi, in an Italianate style and on a very tight site; it holds 432 on three levels and is historically protected. It was the first theatre built in London after the First World War.
The Woman in Black opened here in 1989 and played until March 2023 - thirty-three years. The room's smallness was the point of it: a ghost story works better when the audience can hear each other.
