The oldest pub theatre in the country, and since 2024 in a building of its own next door to the pub.

Dan Crawford opened it in the back room of the King's Head in 1970 and started the thing every other pub theatre in London copied. It ran there for fifty-four years. On 5 January 2024 it moved a few doors up Upper Street into a purpose-built house of its own, with a 220-seat auditorium and a fifty-seat cabaret room downstairs called 4Below.
The programme is predominantly queer work - new plays, musicals, and a great many transfers from Edinburgh that come down in the autumn - alongside opera at a scale you can hear properly, which was the old room's other speciality. The move traded the pub's charm for sightlines, a proper stage and seats that were not put there in 1970, which most people who saw a show in the back room will tell you was the right call.
