It opened in 2010 in the ground floor of an office block and has spent every year since punching several weights above eighty seats. The programme is built around companies rather than plays: ensembles that devise their own work get a room, a run and enough money to finish something, which is the thing almost nobody else in London offers.
Operation Mincemeat premiered here in 2019 and is now a West End musical. The awards have followed the method rather than any one show - two Peter Brook awards in its first years, Fringe Theatre of the Year in 2017 and again in 2022, the Stage's Innovation Award in 2019, and the Critics' Circle's Empty Space Peter Brook Award in 2023.
Tickets are cheap and the run is usually three or four weeks, so the thing to do is book something you have never heard of.
