P. T. Barnum built a career on persuading people that what they were looking at was extraordinary, and the 1980 musical Cy Coleman, Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble made of him works the same way: over twenty actor-musicians, acrobats and circus turns, and a leading man who has to learn the high wire. Matt Rawle plays Barnum at Wimbledon, directed by Jonathan O'Boyle and choreographed by Oti Mabuse; the songs are Join the Circus, Colours of My Life and Come Follow the Band. Two hours ten with an interval. It uses smoke, fire, gunshots and flashing lights, and it depicts racism, slavery and the exploitation of children and animals.
