King Shahryar, betrayed once, has taken to marrying a wife a day and having her killed in the morning. Scheherazade volunteers, and then tells him a story each night that she does not finish. Mary Zimmerman's adaptation threads the tales - merchants, thieves, spirits, lovers - into the frame that holds them, and the king recovers a conscience as he listens. Staged in the Studio.
