Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Opera Holland Park

The company puts up a temporary theatre in the grounds of Holland House each year and takes it down again at the end of the season, so it exists for about ten weeks and then does not. The stage sits against the surviving wall of the house, which was bombed in 1940 and never rebuilt.

The repertoire leans towards Verdi and Puccini and towards Italian works too rarely staged to risk in a permanent house. The peacocks that live in the park have no respect for any of it and can be heard during quiet passages.
