Kander and Ebb's songs - Willkommen, Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, Money - sit inside Joe Masteroff's book, drawn from John Van Druten's play and behind that Christopher Isherwood's Berlin stories, in which an English writer watches a city stop being able to protect anybody. What this staging does is remove the proscenium: the Playhouse has been rebuilt in the round as the Kit Kat Club, you come in through the back of the building, and the band and the dancers are working the room before anything starts.
It took seven Olivier Awards, including both musical acting prizes for Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley. Two hours forty-five including the interval. There is adult content and firearms appear on stage.
