Revelations, the piece the company has closed with since 1960.
At Sadler's Wells.
Alvin Ailey founded his company in New York in 1958 to put Black American experience on a concert stage, and it has been coming to Sadler's Wells for decades. This is the repertory half of the London run, built round Revelations — thirty-six minutes set to spirituals, made in 1960 out of what Ailey called his blood memories of the church and the fields in Texas, and probably the most performed modern dance work there is. Audiences clap along to Rocka My Soul whether or not they mean to.
