John Adams wrote Harmonielehre after eighteen months unable to compose, and began it with a dream of an oil tanker rising out of San Francisco Bay. Britten's American Overture opens - written in 1941, mislaid, and not played until 1983. 19:30, about an hour forty-five, £25, £8 for under-30s.
