Performance venues

London's stages and concert rooms: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

The Place

A Victorian drill hall behind Euston where British contemporary dance was invented.

PlayhousesFringe & pubsWorth it for the building

R. W. Edis built it in 1888 as a drill hall for the Artists Rifles, a volunteer corps of painters and architects. In 1969 Robin Howard bought it to house the London Contemporary Dance School and the company that became London Contemporary Dance Theatre, and effectively started contemporary dance in Britain from this address.

It is still the school, and the Robin Howard Dance Theatre downstairs is where new choreographers get their first proper stage. Resolution, its winter festival, has run since 1989 and gives three companies a night for six weeks.
