It opened on 26 April 1920 as the King's Cross Cinema, seating about thirteen hundred, and closed as an Odeon in August 1970. The Scala repertory cinema moved in from Tottenham Street in 1981 and ran all-night double bills until a court case over an unlicensed screening of A Clockwork Orange finished it.
As a music venue since 1999 it uses the whole building — the old stalls, the circle, a bar at the top — and the layout means the room feels full at any size of crowd.
