A derelict Victorian warehouse off Great Eastern Street, opened as a venue in 2006 and still independent, which almost nothing else of its generation in east London is. The main room is one long brick-and-steel hall; the programme is put together with outside promoters and collectives rather than in-house, so it swings between club nights, live sets and things that are neither.
The carriages on the roof are the reason people recognise it from the street: hollowed-out Jubilee line stock, hoisted up there and used as studios, a fixture of the Shoreditch skyline for years and closed to everyone else. The rooftop, with a bar and access to the carriages, has now opened to the public for the first time.
