The walkways are the Golden Jubilee Bridges, hung on both sides of the Victorian railway bridge into Charing Cross in 2002 to replace a single narrow footway. Which side you take decides what you get: the downstream walkway gives you the City and St Paul's with the river running away under Waterloo Bridge, and the upstream one gives you Parliament, the London Eye and the bend past Lambeth. Trains pass a few feet away the whole time. Free, and open at every hour.
