Waterloo Bridge stands on the bend, which is why it works. Look west and you have Parliament, the London Eye and the Embankment running away under the trees; look east and the river goes down past Somerset House to St Paul's, the City towers and Canary Wharf behind them. The bridge you walk on is Giles Gilbert Scott's, finished in 1945, and women worked on building it in numbers while the men were away, which is why it is sometimes called the Ladies' Bridge. Its plain Portland stone is the reason nothing frames the view. The lights come on in the City towers before the sky has gone, which is the half-hour to be on it.
