Carved in 1947-48 and shown at the first London County Council open-air sculpture exhibition in Battersea Park in 1948, the figures were bought for the park and have stood in it since: three stone women, two metres tall, looking outward as if watching the sky - Moore said the war and the shelter drawings were behind them. The exhibition they came from invented the idea of a sculpture park in Britain.
