Coffee houses, delicatessens, theatre bars and the pubs that made this the centre of gay London: the street has been the district's front room since the Italians and the French arrived in the nineteenth century, and it is still where Soho does its living out of doors. Patisserie Valerie's original, the Coach and Horses, the Prince Edward at the corner. It is narrow enough that a brass band standing in the road stops the traffic entirely, which happens more often than you would expect.
