Ronnie Scott and Pete King, both tenor players, opened a basement in Gerrard Street in 1959 because there was nowhere in London for British musicians to play the American music they wanted to play. They moved to Frith Street in 1965. Scott fronted the room himself for decades and told the same jokes to every audience.
The night is built in layers. The Main Show is the booked act; Upstairs at Ronnie's runs a separate bill in the room above; and the Late Late Show carries on after the main set finishes, usually a jam where the players who have finished work elsewhere in Soho turn up. It is a supper club, with tables and food, and the seats near the stage cost what the view is worth.
