La Femme Infidèle

Chabrol's coolest thriller: a husband hires a detective, and then wishes he had not.

At Cine Lumiere.

Charles Desvallées suspects his wife Hélène of an affair and pays a private investigator to be sure. Chabrol films late-1960s Versailles as a place where feeling is a breach of manners, and lets the consequences arrive at their own pace. Michel Bouquet and Stéphane Audran give performances so contained that the violence, when it comes, reads as bad taste rather than horror. At Ciné Lumière, subtitled.
