A jilted woman takes her revenge by manoeuvring her former lover into marrying a sex worker. The story comes from Jacques the Fatalist; the words are Cocteau's, dense and ornate, set against Bresson's austerity, and the tension between the two is most of what the film is. María Casares - Cocteau's Princess of Death in Orphée - has her first leading role. Made in 1945, and David Thomson's line on it is that its influence on French cinema is far from exhausted.
