Claude Chabrol: Elements of Crime

A fortnight of the New Wave director who stayed with murder, running alongside the larger retrospective at the BFI.

Festival

At Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Chabrol made more than fifty films and set most of them among the French provincial middle classes, where a killing is less shocking than a lapse in manners. He is the one member of the Cahiers group who never stopped working and never fully acquired the reputation the others had, partly because he was prolific and partly because thrillers were held against him.

The ICA's selection runs beside the BFI's fuller retrospective, and is the one to take if you want a fortnight rather than a season.
