The Seasons

Maureen Fazendeiro's portrait of the Alentejo, built out of oral history, field notes, legend, poetry and song.

At Institute of Contemporary Arts.

The Alentejo is the great dry plain of southern Portugal, worked for centuries by landless labourers and largely emptied since. Fazendeiro assembles it from what people there say and sing, from archaeologists' notes and from the stories the region tells about itself, rather than from a narrator.

It shows in the ICA's Off-Circuit strand, which exists for films that stretch what the form can do.
