Hussein Shariffe: a double bill

Two short films by the Sudanese painter and poet who turned to cinema, and whose work has been almost impossible to see.

At Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Hussein Shariffe was a painter first, trained in England, and one of the significant Sudanese artists of his generation before he began making films in the 1970s. His cinema is closer to his painting than to anything documentary: landscape, poetry and a refusal to explain. He left Sudan after the 1989 coup and died in Cairo in 2005.

Shasha Movies, which works to get Arab cinema seen, presents the double bill.
