The premises have barely changed: bowed windows, panelling black with age, and a floor that has subsided so much it slopes visibly. The giant coffee scales in the front room were used to weigh customers from 1765 - the ledgers record Byron, Pitt the Younger and the Aga Khan among thousands of others.
It holds royal warrants and sells everything from twelve-pound bottles to first growths, though no longer over the counter at No. 3: the wine moved to a purpose-built shop at 63 Pall Mall in 2017 and the spirits to No. 1, next door. The cellars underneath run out beneath the street.
No. 3 is offices, cellars and tasting rooms rather than a shop. The Spirits Shop at 1 St James's Street and the Wine Shop at 63 Pall Mall both open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 19:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 18:00, and close Sunday, Monday and bank holidays.
