The Institute is the Italian state's cultural arm in Britain, and it works its programme hard: a week here might hold a novelist in conversation, a film screening, a recital, a children's reading hour in Italian at a public library, or a seminar on a writer. The Italian Library series has reached its thirty-fourth evening. Much of the programme is free and a good deal of it is bilingual, though the book clubs and the children's hours are in Italian.
Its own library lends Italian books and films, and there are language courses. The Institute is shut on Italian public holidays as well as British ones, so Liberation Day in April and Republic Day in June are both closed days.
