The Art of Listening

The Beatrice Warde lecture, given by eight people at once on what typography sounds like.

Lecture / talkBooks & writers

At St Bride Foundation.

St Bride's annual lecture is named for Beatrice Warde, who wrote the essay comparing a typeface to a crystal goblet - the argument that type should be invisible and let the wine through. This year it is handed to eight speakers rather than one, each on how they take in the world of type by something other than looking: listening to the craft, to other designers, to the people who read what they set.
