Talk: Celebration and Ceremony at Barts, Charterhouse and the Royal Hospital Chelsea

Three ancient City institutions on the ceremonies they have each kept going for centuries.

Lecture / talkHistoryFree

At St Bartholomew's Hospital Museum.

Three short talks on what these foundations still do every year. The Royal Hospital Chelsea marks Founder's Day for Charles II, who founded it in 1692, and has done so almost every year since. Barts has held View Day for close to 500 years, and possibly in some form since 1123; it began as an inspection of the hospital's properties and a chance to show the work to the neighbourhood. The Charterhouse, an almshouse in a former monastery, has marked its own Founder's Day for more than 400 years and added a second, sombre ceremony in 2005.
