Tate Britain is the national collection of British art from the Tudors to now, and it stands on Millbank on the site of the old Millbank prison, built by the sugar merchant Henry Tate, who gave his pictures and the building and opened it on 21 July 1897. The Tate name was informal until 1932 and official until 2000, when the modern collection moved downriver to Bankside and this became the British half.
The displays are hung as a walk through time, so a visitor can go from Tudor portraits to Hockney and Bridget Riley in one line of rooms, and the Clore Gallery of 1987, James Stirling's postmodern wing, holds the Turner Bequest: everything J.M.W. Turner left the nation, the largest collection of his work anywhere. The building was renovated in 2013 by Caruso St John, who reopened the balcony of the rotunda, shut since the 1920s, and put a spiral staircase beneath the dome. Entry is free, and the Turner Prize exhibition comes here every other year.
