The Marquesses of Hertford were among the richest men in Europe, and the fourth of them spent his life in Paris buying what the French Revolution and its aftermath had shaken loose: Watteau, Boucher and Fragonard's The Swing, Sèvres porcelain, Boulle furniture and the arms and armour that fill the ground floor. He left it all to his illegitimate son Richard Wallace, who added the medieval and Renaissance pieces and brought everything to Hertford House on Manchester Square, and Wallace's widow gave it to the nation in 1897 on one condition: that nothing should ever be added or lent out. So the collection is still exactly what they bought, twenty-five rooms of it, opened in 1900, with Frans Hals's Laughing Cavalier, Titian, Rembrandt, Velázquez, Canaletto and Poussin upstairs among the French. It is free and rarely crowded, and the glazed courtyard in the middle is one of the better lunches in Marylebone.
