The cutting the railway runs through between Forest Hill and New Cross Gate is four kilometres long and two hundred metres wide in places, and carries what is reckoned the finest run of railside wildlife habitat in London. This is one of four reserves strung along it, with woodland, meadow, a pond and beehives on old railway ground at the top of Devonshire Road. It opens on the last Sunday of the month, from one until five.
