The moat is the oldest thing here, a medieval one, and it still runs round an island in front of the house. The house is the Water House, where William Morris lived as a boy and which now holds his museum; behind it are the original terraced gardens and the William Morris Garden, planted and weeded by volunteers on Thursday mornings. The rest of the park is a working local one - skate park, bowling greens, tennis courts, a sandpit, a nature area at the northern end where Lloyd Park runs into Aveling Park - and it was rebuilt in 2012 with Heritage Lottery money. The café is in the Aveling Centre.
