Flemish Gothic of 1898 with carved panels by the sculptor who did the Blackfriar's monks.
Historic interior
Rebuilt in 1898 by R. A. Lewcock with interior carving by F. T. Callcott, who did the jolly monks at the Blackfriar. What survives is the whole scheme: a U-shaped bar serving two rooms divided by a screen of wood and glass, mirrored fittings and overmantels, a deep gilded frieze in the Adam manner, a plaster ceiling of medallions, gilded panels by Callcott, and an extension room lit by three lanterns. There is a corner turret with an ogee cupola.
In 2013 the tenant took every draught beer off in protest at what the pub company was charging him, and the pumps stayed dry for years; cask came back with a new lease in 2022. There are eleven rooms to stay in and the kitchen leans north Indian.
The Kiln Theatre is across the road.
