Two palaces in one: the Tudor courtyards, Great Hall and kitchens that Wolsey built and Henry took, and the baroque state apartments Wren added for William and Mary, joined at the back like a stately mistake. Victoria opened it to the public in the first year of her reign, and it has been a day out ever since - the maze, the Great Vine, the real tennis court, the gardens along the Thames and the costumed Henry who may or may not speak to you. The Chapel Royal here is still a working royal chapel.

Last admission an hour before closing; shorter hours in winter. About 30 to 40 minutes by train from Waterloo to Hampton Court station, across the bridge from the gate. The gardens have free open days through the year.
