The church has been a concert venue for as long as anyone can remember, and its name is on more recordings than most concert halls: the Academy of St Martin in the Fields was founded here in 1958 and took the church's name with it.
Two different things happen. Lunchtime recitals are free and informal, usually young professionals or students, in the church itself. Evening concerts are ticketed and often played by candlelight, which is a device that would be irritating anywhere with worse acoustics and works here. The Cafe in the Crypt underneath runs jazz one night a week.
