Daunt Books Marylebone

An Edwardian bookshop with oak galleries and a stained-glass window, arranged by country rather than by subject.

BooksMid-range

The galleried back room, shelved by country.

Also in Classic British Shops and Literary London.

The building was purpose-built as a bookshop in 1912 and is the most beautiful room of its kind in London: a long skylit hall with galleries on both sides and a conservatory window at the end.

The arrangement is the idea - novels, history, cookery and guides for a country shelved together, so looking up Japan puts Kawabata beside the walking guides. It works better than it sounds.
