Shipping on the Road to Net Zero

An economic historian on what earlier upheavals in shipping can teach an industry trying to decarbonise.

Lecture / talk

At King's College London.

The shipping industry has to reach net zero by 2050 and has no settled idea how. Stig Tenold, professor of economic history at the Norwegian School of Economics in Bergen, argues that it has done this before - that the transitions from sail to steam and coal to oil carry five specific lessons for owners and policymakers now. He chairs a foundation that owns one of Norway's oldest shipping companies, so the argument is not only academic. Part of King's Maritime History Seminars, free, and run as a hybrid.
