The Naval War in the Baltic, 1914-1915

How the outnumbered Russian fleet drove the German navy out of the eastern Baltic, and took its codebooks.

Lecture / talk

At King's College London.

Everyone expected the small Russian fleet to be swept from the Baltic by the Germans. Seven months later the Germans had pulled out of the central and eastern Baltic with losses they could not afford, their merchant traffic disrupted, and their secret naval codes in Russian hands. The talk follows the campaign to the sea freezing in February 1915, and puts the outcome down to the two commanders and how each read the new technology. Part of King's Maritime History Seminars.
