Guided tours worth booking: walks led by people who know the streets, and the bus, river and cycling tours that earn their fare. Each is drawn on the map as the ground it covers, from where it meets.
Clerkenwell on its hillside, ten minutes from St Paul's and a different city.
Every Monday, 14:30Walking
The name is the clerks' well, and the place is genuinely old: mystery plays, a priory, plague pits, riots, rookeries, and then the watchmakers, printers and distillers who made it a workshop quarter. It sits on a hill just outside the City wall, which is why it kept its own street plan, and the walk is about what survived being that close to money for a thousand years.
