Performance venues

London's stages, concert rooms and cinemas: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the repertory and arthouse cinemas, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Cine Lumiere

Two screens inside the Institut francais, and the place in London for French and European film.

Cinemas

It shows new French and European releases, many of them exclusive to it, alongside UK premieres, classics, documentaries and children's films, and builds seasons on top - a retrospective given to one actor across a whole career, a national cinema, a festival. The London Spanish Film Festival runs here, and there are strands for families.

What separates it from a cinema that simply subtitles is the talking. Directors, actors, academics and critics are brought on stage after screenings as a matter of routine rather than as an occasional event, and a good part of the programme is built around somebody being in the room to answer for the film.
