Performance venues

London's stages, concert rooms and cinemas: the West End houses and the playhouses that make their own shows, the grand halls, the churches with a musical life, the jazz basements, the comedy clubs, the repertory and arthouse cinemas, the clubs proper, and the rooms above pubs where things start. What is on is listed under each venue, and in What's On.

What is on at them this week is in What's On: Performance

Close-Up Film Centre

Forty seats, a cafe, and a lending library of twenty-six thousand films.

CinemasLate

The library is the reason to know about it. Twenty-six thousand titles, weighted towards early cinema, world cinema, documentary, experimental film and video art, including rare things held nowhere else and work by filmmakers no distributor represents, alongside books on theory, criticism, practice, history and biography. Members borrow from it, and the online archive carries Vertigo, the film journal founded in 1993, in full.

The cinema beside it has run since 2005 and programmes the films that shaped the art rather than the ones out this week, often with the filmmaker there to talk about them. Forty seats, space for two wheelchairs, digital projection and surround sound. The cafe and bar sit in the middle of it, where the films and the books can be got at over a coffee deliberately blended in the older European style rather than the current one.
