The basement has been putting on jazz since 1969, and the incongruity is the whole charm: you order a pizza upstairs, go down a staircase, and find a low room with a grand piano where a great many well-known musicians have recorded live albums.
The bookings run to visiting American singers and instrumentalists as well as British bands, and the room is small enough that the front tables are within arm's reach of the piano.
