The incongruity is the whole charm: you order upstairs, go down a staircase, and find a low room with a grand piano where a great many musicians have recorded live albums. It has been running since 1969 and the bookings go to visiting Americans as readily as to British bands - Norah Jones and Jamie Cullum both played it before anyone had heard of them.
The front tables are within arm's reach of the piano, and you eat through the set, which is either the point of the place or the objection to it depending on who you ask. Around thirty-five nights a month.
